A Brief History of
Holly Hills Baptist Church
Powhatan, Virginia

On June 18, 1972 forty plus people split from the Southwest Baptist Church and met in a house to make decisions about starting another church.  On June 25th they met and worshiped as the newly started Powhite Baptist Church.  They contacted the Rev. Johnny Albert to preach and he preached his first message July 2, 1972.  The church officially voted him as their pastor a few weeks later and moved their services to the Community Center which was located on Robious Road.  Sometime later they changed their name to the Robious Road Baptist Church.

In March of 1977 the land and building of Rocky Oak Methodist Church (present day Holly Hills Baptist Church) was rented for services.  On June 26, 1977 the education building was dedicated for Sunday School and Church.  Plans were made to purchase the church from Rocky Oak Methodist and the foundation of the present auditorium was started on April 14, 1978.  The first service held in the new auditorium was a Christmas program on December 17, 1978. On May 30, 1982 Rev. Johnny Albert submitted his resignation as pastor of Holly Hills Baptist Church.

Rev. Robin Lester was called as interim pastor and on July 15, 1982 he was called as the pastor of Holly Hills Baptist Church with 56 members attending at that time.  On September 19, 1982 Pastor Lester held his first Baptismal Service.  David Shultz was appointed as deacon with others on June 24, 1984.  On June 12, 1988 Rev. Robin Lester submitted his resignation to be effective on July 10, 1988.

Rev. Bob Burchfield was called as the pastor of Holly Hills Baptist Church on October 16, 1988 and on the 23rd preached his first message as the new pastor with 48 people in attendance. On January 21, 1990 Pastor Burchfield resigned as pastor of the church.  On January 28 a business meeting was called to formulate a pulpit committee of all the men present (8).

Rev. Randy Blackwell began filling the pulpit on July 8, 1990 with 30 active members present and on September 16, 1990 was called as the new pastor.  After thirty-three and a half years of faithful service to the Lord, Pastor Randy Blackwell retired on March 17, 2024.  Our church is now in search of the man that God wants to serve with us as our next pastor.

Holly Hills Baptist Church continues to emphasize the consistent teaching and preaching of God’s Word through a very active Youth Ministry, Adult Bible Study, Sunday School Ministry and Worship Services.  We have been blessed with a loving church family consisting of faithful believers who, through the power of the Holy Spirit and for the glory of God, have participated in worship, service and the encouragement of one another as we look for the soon return of Jesus Christ.
